Burden-of-illness studies
Increasing demand for data on the economic burden of
diseases has fostered growing interest in cost-of-illness studies.
PAI pioneered the development of techniques of cost-of-illness ascertainment
almost 20 years ago. In the 1970s, under contract to the U.S. National
Center for Health Statistics, researchers at PAI developed the techniques
for incidence-based cost-of-illness studies that remain in use today.
Since then, PAI has conducted numerous cost-of-illness studies, including
analyses of the costs of coronary heart disease, breast cancer, leukemia,
stroke, diabetes, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease,
hypercholesterolemia, benign prostatic hypertrophy, and rheumatoid
arthritis.
